Last year Pack 98 helped the Salvation Army during December by volunteering for a time slot and bell ringing at various locations in South Brunswick. Pack 98's help did make a difference in our community.
For those of you not familiar with 'Bell Ringing', the South Brunswick branch of the Salvation Army needs lots of help with ringing the bells at the buckets around town. Basically, this means standing relatively still so as not to run into shoppers while ringing a bell and smiling; say "Happy Holidays" and "Thank you" to anyone who contributes. Scouts should wear their Class A uniforms (blue or tan shirts with hats). No more than two children (friends, siblings, etc) should sign up for a slot at the same time as there is often only one bell to ring at a bucket. One scout has played a variety of holiday tunes on various instruments during his time. It tends to get more smiles (and more $) as well as passes the time more quickly. The Salvation Army has another crew that rides between the buckets and empties them from time to time.
We need to emphasize to all volunteers that this is a chain that can not be broken as you can not leave the station until the next person shows up. So - be on time; and as a safety precaution - make sure you don't have an obligation immediately after your time slot. We are provided with a sheet of telephone numbers in case someone does 'no show'.
And let's not forget the family spirit.....slots can also be filled by families instead of just scouts.
Bell Ringing is fun and provides funds to some local people who have far fewer resources than we do.
Also note that most, if not all, of the funds stay local.
Pack 98 has volunteered to cover Pierre's on Georges Rd
December19 & 20 from 9:00am - 2:00pm
